PROVIDENT FUND

How do I check whether my EPF is actually being deposited?

It is deducted from your salary every month. Whether it reaches your account is a separate question, and one worth asking annually.

How do I check whether my EPF is actually being deposited?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Log in at the EPFO member portal with your UAN, or check the passbook on the UMANG app, and compare the monthly credits against your payslips. A deduction shown on a payslip is not proof of deposit. Check once a year, and check again whenever you change jobs.

Why this is worth an hour

Provident fund is usually the largest single retirement asset a salaried Indian has, and it is the one nobody looks at. Twelve percent of basic pay from you, a matching contribution from the employer, compounding at a rate most debt investments cannot match, accumulating for decades.

Deduction and deposit are two separate events. The first happens on your payslip. The second is supposed to happen at the employer's end, and when it does not, the gap can run for months before anyone notices.

How to check

Find your UAN, the Universal Account Number, which appears on your payslip or can be obtained from HR. Activate it once on the EPFO member portal using the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. Then open the passbook.

The passbook shows month by month credits, split into employee share, employer share and pension contribution. Line those up against twelve payslips. Any month showing a deduction on the payslip but no credit in the passbook is a question for your employer, in writing.

The three things to fix while you are in there

One UAN, not several. Changing jobs sometimes generates a new UAN instead of carrying the old one forward. Multiple UANs mean fragmented balances, and merging them is a straightforward request through the portal.

Transfer, do not withdraw. Withdrawing a provident fund balance at a job change is the most expensive routine financial decision Indians make. It resets the compounding on the largest retirement asset most people have, and it is taxable if withdrawn before five years of continuous service. Transferring takes a single online request.

Nomination. A large share of EPF accounts have no e-nomination filed. Without it, a claim becomes a documentation exercise for the family at the worst possible time. It takes ten minutes on the portal.

The wider context

More women are inside this system than ever. Government figures show 26.9 lakh net female subscribers added to EPFO during 2024-25. That makes checking the balance a habit worth establishing early rather than a thing to look into at retirement.

Rules on withdrawal, taxation and transfer change. Verify current provisions on the EPFO portal before acting.

ONE MOVE THIS WEEK

Activate your UAN and open the passbook this week. Then file the e-nomination while you are already logged in.
